Turbosound's self-powered and networkable NuQ speakers were selected for the new
Bon Marche Studio at The University of Technology Sydney's Broadway Campus.
The multi-purpose performing arts and multimedia technology space measures 12m x 12m (10m high) with retractable raked seating for 80 people. The Bon Marche Studio has a wide range of uses including screening 5.1 cinema productions, hosting performing arts pieces and experimental surround projects.
A number of different speakers were considered and auditioned for the project with consultant Kevin Davidson and UTS Media Centre Manager James Hurley selecting the NuQ's due to their performance, on-board power amplifiers and DSP, remote control and compact size.
The Turbosound system includes 9 x NuQ-12DP's with flying yokes and a single B-18DP subwoofer. The NuQ-12DP is a compact self-powered cabinet consisting of a 12" LF driver and a 1.4" compression driver with on-board amplification and DSP. The amp module delivers 2x800w for bi-amp operation while on-board DSP provides the user with EQ, delay and gain control of each cabinet.
The B-18DP is a single 18" bandpass subwoofer with an on-board 1600w power amplifier and DSP.
Both the NuQ-12DP and B-18DP are networkable using the BV-Net protocol allowing UTS technical staff to monitor and adjust each speaker individually.
For the UTS staff, an important feature of the Turbosound system is "auto-power-off" where each speaker will switch off after a preset (user selectable) time if no signal is present, and then switch on again once audio starts. This is a great energy conservation feature for times when the room is left unattended for long periods. It also saves someone having to consciously remember to turn the speaker system off/on either side of performances. Additionally, the on-board DSP and network control allows the Media Centre staff to save and recall different scenes to suit the wide array of venue applications.
On powering up the system for the first time, Media Centre Manager James Hurley (pictured above right with Jeff Shoesmith (Hills SVL) was most impressed:
"I'm so happy with the system. It rocks!"
The speaker configuration for the Bon Marche Studio is Left, Centre, Right, two left, two right and two for rear surround. All are flown, as is the B-18DP subwoofer. |
