TCS Compact series aids flexibility at Hindu Temple

Inaugurated in 1978, the Vishwa Hindu Kendra temple in Southall, west London, has recently seen the completion of a project to erect a two storey community centre, which has included a new function room complete with a Turbosound audio system.

Designed and installed by Electracoustic Ltd, the system had to sound perfect and blend sympathetically with the stylish décor of the function room. Having used many Turbosound products on other projects, Electracoustic's Jon Trotter realised that the TCS Compact series was ideal for the project, installing a pair of TCS-121Cs as main stage loudspeakers, with four TCS-081Cs as delayed pairs down the length of the room.

"The TCS Compact series offers high audio quality at a very good price, but the colour option was also crucial as it was important that they were visually unobtrusive," says Jon. "I also wanted a product I could use with and without bass cabinets, depending on the type of event."

Driven by MC2 series amplifiers and controlled by a Biamp Nexia digital audio controller, the system is required to work in a variety of situations, from weddings, meetings, community and religious events through to DJs and live bands.

To be able to accommodate all these requirements, Jon also installed a pair of Turbosound TCS-118C bass cabinets. However, he took the unusual step of adding custom wheels, to allow them to be used when the situation demands it. For events when they aren't required, they can easily be unplugged and stored out of the way.

The ease of changeover is aided by the Biamp system being set up with four different states. A simple wall control allows users to select whichever state is most appropriate for the event, with the audio only being routed to the bass cabinet outputs if that particular state is selected.

"It's a very nice sounding room," says Jon. "When we first went into it, there was no carpet and it was extremely reverberant. I knew the carpet would soak up a certain amount but that it would still be a very live sounding room. So I decided that a distributed system using the TCS loudspeakers would be the best solution.

"The result is a flexible, user friendly and cost effective system, with excellent sound quality and intelligibility throughout the room. The system hasn't yet been used to its full potential, but the temple has been very pleased with how it has sounded on the events the room has hosted so far."
